Shalom Chevra, In today's class, Rabbi Moshe Chaim clues us in on some of the deeper aspects of the blessings found in the Jewish Prayer Book, also called a Siddur. The Siddur was originally compiled by a group known as The Men of the Great Assembly over 1,000 years ago. And we are using the same thing today! On the surface the prayer book may sound like some nice words of praise for the Ribono Shel Olam (Master of the World). When you take a second glance and take some time to contemplate what is actually going on you will realize there is much more to the story. Each and every word was carefully selected and arranged in the most perfected way in order to allow those who read it to unlock and tap in to real prayer, face to face with God. A popular question people have is, "why can't I just talk to God however I want?" In truth, that is totally acceptable and actually one of the fundamental practices used by Tzaddikim and Sages since the beginning of time. "So what's so special about the Siddur?" The simple answer is the Siddur includes prayers applicable to everybody at any time. Unfortunately, if someone is speaking to Hashem on their own terms, a lot of these fundamental concepts may be overlooked. Additionally, we know from Torah and the Gemara and Halacha that there is a certain order of operations in how one should optimally build up, experience, and end the prayers in order to get the best results. Just like in math you can't simply use an addition operation before the exponents. Just like in mathematics there is a concept called PEMDAS, an order of operations, there is one for Prayers, especially the morning prayer service which a person should complete before going about their day. PEMDAS: 1. Parenthesis 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication/Division 4. Addition/Subtraction Morning Prayer Service: 1. Morning Blessings 2. Introductory Psalms 3. Shema 4. Shimona Esrei 5. Tachnun 6. Aleinu If we could just do any order of operations we wanted to in math, everybody would be getting different answers. The same can be said for the prayer service.
